Just the other day, I saw a headline “Facebook is coming to an end March 2012!” Of course, it was a hoax and I doubt that the blurb caused so much as a hiccup in the social media world. But isn’t it amazing how much Facebook and Twitter have changed communication in the short space of since they were established in 2004 and 2006?
Does your website have a Twitter or Facebook presence? Should it? How about LinkedIn?
Each of these groups can have an impact on your company’s presence on the web. But which is best for you? Do you need all three? Before you respond with, “I’ve already got enough on my plate,” let’s talk about how any or all of these groups can be used in your marketing plan. I will be talking about each of these separately over the next few days, but here’s a short description of them and how they may impact your marketing presence.
- Facebook: Before you dismiss Facebook as “just” a teen thing, remember that there are people who do not leave the house – or even their bed – without checking the latest posts of their friends. Friends (whether they have ever met in person or not) will share their experiences at the latest cool restaurant or what they thought about the newest movie (including “Social Network” about the founding of Facebook) or who’s having a sale on the must-have fashion. Does your company sell what you hope will be THE thing to own, whether it’s a teeny-bopper fad or the middle-age man’s dream truck?
- Twitter: is a micro-blogging tool that has helped to fan revolutions. Those 140 character Tweets can be powerful.
- LinkedIn: This social media site is considered the professional’s tool of choice. You can connect with people that you already know for networking or sales prospects or recruiting (whether recruiting others to your company or being recruited by another company). You can also use LinkedIn to network with others in your field whom you do not know – yet. It’s considered the “grownup” version of Facebook.
I’ll be talking about each of these over the next few days and helping you explore whether one or all are a fit for your marketing plan. But if you haven’t already checked them out, give it a try. At least look around and see where you find their logos. You may be surprised.
